it is nie to have the discovery channel on cable here in korea, it is a nice alternative to the many poor western shows that are aired on afn and other channels. yet i have a complaint about the quality of the narrators that grace so many of the programs.
it is rare to find one that is actually good and who speaks in an intelligent manner. most talk like their audience is of the moronically brain dead level, which is distracting to the show and undermines the information being presented. as a couple of examples, the JFK camera piece was unbearable to sit through, as the narrator sucked any intelligent life out of the material and spoke in such a way that it sounded like shewas talking to her dog. the mummy autopsies' narrator was almost as bad with the forced drama tone in his vocal intonations being out of place which ruined the whole show. the information usually is sufficient when investigating ancient history, mummies or archaeological digs. those of us who are interested in such topics are not pre-schoolers and it would be nice if the material was presented in a fashion that does not insult one's intelligence and is on an adult level. it would also be nice if you could structure your programs to be more objective, instead of automatically assuming the evolutionary position. one would like the information presented in a manner that allows the viewer to make up their own minds, instead of having that decision made for them by the material contained in the broadcast. anywqays, i do hope you work on that narrator problem because most of your shows are interesting yet those voice-overs really destroy the presentation. |
