So the doors finally open..... but just how does all this affect the traditions and values it's people so dearly cling onto. Is China truely moving forward or simply selling out?

I guess that's what makes us human. The choice to hold on to what we want and the choice to let go of whatever we want.

Your grandparents chose to believe in their ways--something that has gotten them that far for so long. (Now who's to say that they are wrong?) But it doesn't also mean that you have to follow. After all it's YOUR life and therefore YOUR choice to change with the world.

I guess there's a reason why some people don't talk to their parents much over things. The economy of yesteryears is seldom the same for current and future ones. Differing opinions sometimes serve to strain relations...

I don't know about your grandparents in particular.... I guess for migrant descendants, they still hold on to certain parts of their culture, like their customs and traditions, but after a while it does get taken out of context.

As a 4th generation chinese, I was quite awed when I went to China for the first time two years ago. In Chinese documentaries, I always thought they were being exagerrating when they said things like "Magnificent buildings", "overwhelming blah blah blah".... but going to Beijing is really eye-opening. Each of their building is like 5 - 10 times wider, than the average ones we see. It seems the scale is 3:1 when compared to houses here.
So I guess the Chinese really have something to be proud of and they really weren't exagerrating with their descriptions. =)
